Quella del Cammeo è un’arte che affonda le sue radici lontano nella sua storia e da sempre quest’arte si è intrecciata con la storia di nobili e potenti. I cammei più antichi vennero trovati in tombe risalenti al III secolo a.C. e collocano l’origine di questo gioiello nella civiltà ellenistica. Una delle massime espressioni del genere risalenti a questo periodo è il cammeo Gonzaga, inciso su pietra sardonice, presenta i profili sovrapposti di un uomo e una donna, che si ipotizza essere Alessandro Magno e Olimpiade.
Cameo is an art that has its roots far in its history and this art has always been intertwined with the history of nobles and powerful. The oldest cameos were found in tombs dating back to the 3rd century BC. and place the origin of this jewel in the Hellenistic civilization. One of the greatest expressions of the genre dating back to this period is the Gonzaga cameo, engraved on Sardinian stone, presents the overlapping profiles of a man and a woman, who is assumed to be Alexander the Great and Olympiad.
Ma l’arte di incidere è ben più antica. La prima pietra incisa conosciuta risale al 15.000 a.c., dove incisioni rupestri venivano eseguite nella roccia per ricordare e comunicare qualcosa. La scrittura e tutte le altre forme d’arte discendono da queste prime rudimentali forme di comunicazione. Il passo successivo prima di arrivare al cammeo sono i sigilli. Questi venivano fatti su vari materiali come legno, avorio e pietra. Gli stessi sigilli erano indossati come amuleti o portafortuna per proteggere chi li indossava contro il demonio.
But the art of engraving is much older. The first known engraved stone dates back to 15,000 BC, where rock carvings were made in the rock to remember and communicate something. Writing and all other art forms derive from these first rudimentary forms of communication. The next step before reaching the cameo are the seals. These were made on various materials such as wood, ivory and stone. The same seals were worn as amulets or lucky charms to protect the wearer against the devil.

Tra il III e il II secolo a.C. grazie all’introduzione di nuovi materiale come la sardonica, proveniente dall’Arabia e dall’India, si iniziarono ad incidere i primi cammei.
I cammei antichi, oltre a raffigurare miti e leggende, rivelano le maniere, le usanze, le filosofie, le credenze, eventi sociali e storici che hanno marcato il nostro passato. Solo di recente abbiamo associato il nome “cammeo” con i profili di belle donne. Dopo la morte di Alessandro Magno, il potere passò dai greci ai romani, e molta dell’arte, della letteratura e della filosofia greca vennero assorbiti ed integrati dalla cultura romana. Centinaia di artigiani greci vennero in Italia per soddisfare la richiesta di cammei di ogni genere.

Con il passare degli anni l’arte del cammeo divenne sempre più importante e i cammei furono utilizzati ampiamente anche nella gioielleria, inteso come un grande dono da regalare e indossare. Un tempo si diceva ad una ragazza, come complimento, che aveva ‘un profilo da cammeo‘, infatti i cammei incastonati all’oro e all’argento e abbelliti con pietre preziose sono di notevole finezza.
Le famiglie più ricche utilizzavano i cammei più grandi per far incidere dei ritratti familiari e per decorare le case. Nonostante le origini antichissime ancora oggi ogni cammeo cela un velo di misteriosità e leggenda , restando un gioiello ricco di significato e importanza.
